Intensive Therapy

For over 20 years, ministry couples have been traveling from all areas of our country to participate in one to two weeks of intensive pastoral counseling and marriage therapy. The stresses that accompany the call to ministry are unique, significant, and can be overwhelming to ministers and their families. Often, our ideas of what the ministry will be like and how God will use us in the Christian body do not match up to the reality of our experience in the ministry. These incongruities can be challenging for individuals, couples, and families and can negatively impact the effectiveness of ministry.

An Intensive is a one couple at a time event. Three hours a day are devoted to counseling Monday through Friday. The experience can also include psychological testing.
Although we do offer one week Intensives, we encourage the two week experience and will only schedule a one week experience when the two week Intensive is not possible for the couple involved. A two week Intensive is preferred for several reasons. 1.) Two weeks provides a time frame for a couple to focus on their concerns in fuller more complete manner; 2.) The process accumulates and often the most productive work is done during the second week; 3.) Relaxation and recooperation are a vital part of the experience. Maximum effectiveness requires an unhurried pace.
The specific goals of an Intensive vary from couple to couple. Generally, however, the Intensive goals from the Charis perspective are as follows: 1.) To enable couples to deal freely and redemptively with their personal and relational concerns, hurts and stressors; 2.) To assist couples in gaining a more accurate understanding of how their patterns of thoughts, feelings and behavior originated; 3.) To set couples free to develop a more complete self-understanding and self-appreciation; 4.) To help participants learn more effective patterns and skills in relating to themselves and others.
If you are interested in an Intensive and have further questions feel free to call Dr. Frank Green in North Carolina, at (919) 244-8213 or Larry Barber in Oregon at (541) 607-0601 ext 1.
